What is Vrindkavi?
Vrindkavi is an independent publishing studio creating bold, visually striking graphic novels inspired by Indian mythology, folklore, and history. We blend deep research with cinematic, often manga-influenced art, reimagining timeless Indian stories for a global audience. Our work is defined by authenticity, cultural pride, and storytelling that matches international standards.
Our Origins
Vrindkavi began in October 2022 with a simple mission, to give Indian stories the same creative excellence and cultural pride that Japan and the United States bring to their own. Too often, our myths and legends are adapted without depth, losing their emotional and philosophical richness. Inspired by classics like Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama and the legacy of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat, we set out to create modern retellings that remain true to their roots, yet speak to contemporary audiences.
Our founder was driven by the belief that Indian epics carry universal wisdom. While some aspects may feel dated, their core ideas of dharma, duty, love, and justice are timeless. Vrindkavi exists to bring these stories to life in ways that are rich, beautiful, and relevant today.
Our Projects
Our journey began with Vikram Vetaal, a ten-part retelling of the classic folklore where King Vikram carries the body of Vetaal, who narrates strange and thought-provoking stories along the way. While the series faced challenges in marketing and sales, it became a valuable learning experience, sharpening our production skills and clarifying our creative vision.
Building on these lessons, we launched two major titles that defined Vrindkavi’s direction. Ramayan: Aarambha Kanda, a concise 92-page prequel, introduced readers to the meeting of Luva and Kusha with Valmiki, setting the stage for a larger saga. Parashuram: Blood and Dharma, a mature and gritty 172-page graphic novel, became our breakthrough work, earning the Best Comic/Graphic Novel Award at the FICCI BAF Awards 2025 and emerging as our best-selling title. These projects marked a shift to a dedicated writer–illustrator model, allowing for deeper creative focus, smoother workflows, and higher-quality storytelling. We also adopted a black-and-white visual style to suit the tone of our narratives and optimise production.
With a growing Instagram community of nearly 70,000 followers, Vrindkavi has transformed from an experimental idea into a creator of distinctive, high-quality Indian graphic novels.
Future Projects
We are currently developing the second volumes of both our Ramayan and Parashuram series, while also building a dedicated children’s line called Under The Neem Tree. Alongside these, we aim to expand our catalogue with a mix of celebrated epics and lesser-known gems from Indian history and folklore, ensuring a diverse range of stories for different audiences. To reach more readers, we plan to translate our works into multiple Indian and international languages, and we are actively seeking collaborations with artists and writers to accelerate production and bring more of these timeless tales to life.
Our Vision
We aim to become the definitive brand for Indian storytelling, the place readers turn to for authentic, powerful, and beautifully crafted tales from our heritage. While our current focus is graphic novels, our long-term vision includes expanding into animation, shows, and films, sharing Indian epics with the world on the scale of Disney’s cultural storytelling.
Our stories are made in India, for the world. We believe they can resonate far beyond our borders, connecting with people everywhere through their universal themes and emotional truths.
